Fox Valley Montessori School is now enrolling children ages 3–6 in our Primary classrooms in Aurora, Illinois. If your child is curious, busy, and full of questions, they are ready for a place built around exactly that.
Between ages 3 and 6, children build the foundations they will use for life: language, coordination, concentration, and the confidence to try things on their own. Ask any parent of a preschooler and you will hear the same phrase over and over: "I can do it myself!" Montessori education takes that instinct seriously.
Our Primary program gives children a calm, beautiful classroom, real work to do, and teachers who know exactly when to step in and when to step back. Here is what that looks like, and what families most often ask us before they enroll.
Walk into one of our Primary classrooms and the first thing you notice is the quiet hum of children at work. One child is pouring water from a small pitcher. Another is tracing sandpaper letters with two fingers. A small group is counting golden beads at a table, while someone else rolls out a work rug by the window.
No one is waiting for the whole class to move on. Each child chooses meaningful work, settles in, and stays with it as long as it holds their attention. That is the heart of a Montessori prepared environment: everything is child-sized, beautifully arranged, and within reach, so children can follow their curiosity independently.
The materials are hands-on by design and invite children to explore:
Even everyday moments become learning. At mealtime, children set their places, serve themselves, and practice grace and courtesy with their friends.
Every Primary classroom is led by a Montessori-certified teacher, supported by an assistant teacher. Instead of lecturing from the front of the room, they move from child to child and give short, individual lessons matched to each child's readiness.
Our teachers spend a lot of time observing. They take notes on each child's progress and use what they see to decide which lesson or material comes next. A child who is ready for more is never held back. A child who needs more time gets it, without pressure or comparison.
That is what Montessori educators mean by "follow the child." Your child is known as an individual, and their learning path is built around who they are.
Our Primary classrooms bring 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds together in one community, and children stay with the same classroom across a three-year cycle. Here is how that unfolds:

That third year is something special. Our kindergarten-age students attend five full days a week and are an integral part of the classroom. They strengthen their academic skills with developmentally appropriate materials while helping younger children, which builds real confidence. This year is the culmination of everything they have practiced in the Primary community.
Staying together for three years means teachers know your child deeply, and your child knows their classroom as a second home.
Fox Valley Montessori School has been part of the Aurora community since 1969. Over more than five decades, families have trusted us with their children's earliest school years, and they keep coming back for the next.
