Greetings, FVMS families:
I hope everyone is enjoying the warm weather now that winter is behind us. I want to thank everyone again for the record turnout we had at our annual benefit, and a special thanks to Caitlin Hazelton and Jessica Baer for their work as co-chairs of the planning committee, along with all of their members who worked so hard to make the event such a success for the school. I’d also like to thank, on behalf of the board, Jan DuRall who works so tirelessly throughout the year on the many fundraising events with the members of her committee. The dollars the school gains through the benefit and all of theses activities allow us to continue to move forward as an organization in many ways.
I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the death of Regina Barnett, who passed away in March. Regina, along with her late husband Joe, were part of the original group of parents who founded Fox Valley Montessori back in the 1960’s when the school’s programs were run at local churches, first Westminster Presbyterian Church and later New England Congregational prior to establishing our current building. Regina taught art classes at FVMS for many of these early years, and she was the author of a book titled Let Out the Sunshine that adopted Montessori principles to guide parents in using practical life and art lessons in the home environment, a publication that is still available and in print forty years later. Regina’s two daughters are alumni of the school, and they spoke at her recent service about the impact that Montessori education made upon their lives and how important the philosophy and FVMS in particular were to their mother. In recent years, Denise was able to visit Regina in her home and heard many stories of the early years of the school and its founding teachers and families. The board plans to devote any contributions made to the school in Regina’s name to a project related to the arts that can benefit all of our students. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact Denise in the office.
