Children are formally instructed in social skills they will use throughout their lives, for example, saying “please” and “thank you,” interrupting conversations politely, requesting rather than demanding assistance, and greeting guests warmly.
As most of the children are here for lunch each day, they have been able to set their own places for lunch regularly. At school, each setting includes a placemat, glass plate, drinking glass, and utensils, if needed. Table setting is a skill that we encourage the children to practice at home. It is a good task for them as it includes counting the settings for all the people eating together and practicing constant careful movement as they carry the dishes. We eat “family style” during the lunch period; we wait to eat until everyone is seated and then the water/milk pitchers and Hot Lunch items are passed to each other with kind words.
After eating, we wash our own dishes and we all sweep under our chairs.
Thank you for helping us have a successful lunchtime by continuing to send healthful food in your children’s lunches as we continue to encourage positive nutritional choices at FVMS!
